The Peak of BMW Luxury but Two Very Different Propositions.

The BMW X7 and BMW 8 Series share many of the same Luxury DNA principles. But deliver two very different driving experiences.

It was once the case that the BMW 7 Series sat at the top of the BMW Tree as the brand’s flagship car. But today, there is competition for that top spot in the form of the BMW 8 Series. A Sports GT car that drips with quality and class while wrapped in a stunning Coupé, Gran Coupé or Convertible body. And the BMW X7, a 7 seat SUV that’s both practical and imposing at the same time.

Can the new BMW 7 Series defend its title against these newcomers?

BMW X7 Styling.

This new monstrous SUV is a mildly terrifying car to look at, especially when it appears in your rear-view mirror. The grille is huge and combined with the new slim laserline headlights it has a road presence that’s is hard to beat.

While it might look about as aerodynamic as a house brick, that front end is shaped to direct airflow through the front wheel arches and down the sides reducing drag and giving the side profile a lovely sleek and simple shape.

Around the back, there is a set of LED taillight that are joined up by this beautiful chrome trim that runs the full width of the car.

BMW X7 Practicality and Technology

Step inside and it’s hard to argue with the level of luxury in here. The X7 uses BMWs latest interior design language. But because this is a GKL car, it uses more leather, more metal and more glass to really elevate the quality above the likes of the BMW X5. It also now makes use of BMWs brilliant iDrive 7.0 operating system and includes the new digital driver display. It has all the very best technology as standard as you’d expect.

BMW has aimed to exceed its flagship 7 Series, limo-like comfort, so along with air springs, you also get fluid-filled suspension bushings and more sound deadening than a recording studio. There are even pillows for the rear headrests that are more comfortable than those found in some hotels

BMW X7 Performance

There is a range of engines in the new X7 lineup. The one featured here is the new range-topper, the incredible xDrive M50i.

Powered by a version of BMW’s 4.4-litre turbo petrol V8, it produces over 530bhp and 553lb-ft of torque. That’s a considerable 188bhp and 221lb-ft more than the 3.0-litre turbo straight-six found in the xDrive M40i that was fitted at the car’s launch.

The engine is authoritative and smooth, returning a quiet drive that is complemented by an eight-speed automatic transmission that seamlessly moves through the gears. Despite the large dimensions of the model, the engine offers impressive performance figures. Race from 0-62mph in just 4.7 seconds. It’s a real powerhouse.

In addition to the xDrive M50i, you’ll be able to select the xDrive30d model, which offers 265hp and 620Nm. With improved fuel consumption – up to 43.5mpg – and CO2 emissions at 252g/km, this is a no-less impressive option for discerning drivers.

BMW 8 Series Styling.

Now onto the beautiful looking BMW 8 Series. The BMW 8 Series was released to fill the gap left in the lineup after the last 6 series rolled off the production line and The 8 Series badge was revived to ensure this new Coupe was given the respect it deserved. It’s no less luxurious than a BMW 7 Series, it’s every bit as comfortable and high quality, it’s just got more BMW sports car DNA pumping through its fuel lines.

The car featured here is the two-door 8 Series Coupé, one of the very best looking GT cars in its class. But the car is also available with a retractable roof as the 8 Series Convertible. This is a terrific choice for those who like to feel the wind in their hair and the sun on their face. Alternatively, the 8 Series Gran Coupé maintains the aesthetic qualities of its two-door siblings, and adds two more to the mix, while providing increased cabin capacity in the rear should you need the rear seats.

BMW 8 Series Practicality and Technology

The BMW 8 Series was the first of the BMW line up to use the newest interior design language and lead the way with the latest BMW iDrive 7.0 operating system. Incorporating Android Auto and Apple Car Play as standard and incorporating the new digital drivers display and a heads up display, it’s just as well equipped as the X7 and 7 Series alike.

The dash and doors are swathed in beautifully stitched leather and the front seats are some of the most supportive on the market. The boot is a good size, and folding the back seats extends it some more. And scattered around the front cockpit you’ll find several clever storage spaces. Ideal for a long-distance GT car.

BMW 8 Series Performance

Entry-level 8 Series are fitted with a 3.0-litre 340bhp petrol engine. This six-cylinder unit produces 500Nm of torque, enabling Coupé variants to go from 0-60mph in approximately five seconds and reach a top speed of a limited 155mph.

The fastest, most powerful option is a 4.4-litre 530bhp V8 unit. The M850i delivers a peak torque of 750Nm and 0-62mph in roughly 3.5 seconds. Gran Coupé variants lag just a little behind in the performance stakes, while Convertible iterations rank third in terms of acceleration. Overall, though, the differences are fairly negligible between the three cars.
